With Tooth Extractions, Timely Treatment Is Important

Contacting our Birmingham dental office shortly after noticing symptoms can make the difference between saving your tooth and losing it. That means you can protect your long-term oral health just by taking charge and reaching out for care.

It may also turn out that you don't need an extraction, but you might be a good candidate for a less invasive procedure like a crown or filling. We can help you find out for certain—and help you find a solution—at our understanding practice.

Common Misconceptions About Tooth Extractions

They're Painful

If you've had stressful experiences in the past with a dentist or oral surgeon, it can take a lot of courage to consider tooth extraction. Thankfully, extraction doesn't have to hurt. At our office, we use dental anesthetic to ensure that you're fully comfortable throughout your treatment.

They're Nerve-racking

At our Birmingham, AL, office, we have a twofold approach to reducing tooth extraction anxiety. First, our team is kind and honest, striving to make patients feel at home. Second, we offer calming sedation to ease your anxiety as you undergo treatment.

They're Expensive

While cost can be worrisome for all patients, it may not be the barrier you think it is. That's because tooth extractions are eligible for dental insurance coverage, as they impact your health and oral function. To make tooth extraction feasible for Birmingham patients, we will try to maximize your benefits. We also accept financing.

How Does Tooth Extraction Work?

We believe in keeping patients well-informed about their treatment. Though each case is different, you can expect your extraction to go something like this:
Put your oral health first and seek a tooth extraction as soon as possible.
Put your oral health first and seek a tooth extraction as soon as possible.

Consultation

During a consultation, we'll listen to you talk about the symptoms you've been experiencing, like swelling, abscesses, or pain. We'll also assess your teeth to determine the right treatment for your needs.

Anesthetic

If your tooth can't be saved and extraction is necessary, we'll begin the procedure by numbing your mouth with dental anesthetic. As a result, you won't feel any discomfort as we address your affected tooth or teeth. To keep you at ease, we can also administer nitrous oxide or prescribe oral conscious sedation.

Preparation

Your dentist will ensure that the area around your teeth is sterile.

Extraction

Your dentist will make an opening in your gums, so they can extract your tooth down to the root. Some cases may be more complicated than others, like impacted wisdom teeth, but our team can extract even difficult teeth.

Final Touches

After removing any teeth, our dentist may close the area with stitches and cover it with gauze. They may also prescribe antibiotics to take as you heal.

Recovery

Our dentist will give you recovery instructions, like how long to wear your gauze. You'll also need to protect the blood clot over your extraction site to ensure that you do not experience dry socket.

What Happens After Tooth Extraction?

The answer depends on the type of tooth being removed. At our Birmingham practice, we provide tooth extraction for wisdom teeth and other decayed or damaged teeth. Here's what to expect after your treatment:

Wisdom Teeth

With wisdom teeth, you won't need a custom dental restoration. All you need to do next is follow our dentist's instructions, like taking antibiotics and ensuring your blood clot stays in place. There's no need for further treatment unless you notice the signs of dry socket.

After their tooth extraction at our Birmingham office, our patients have several options to fill the spaces in their smile. Choices can depend on your degree of tooth loss. Options at our practice include a dental bridge, an implant-supported crown, or dentures.
